Understanding firewalls
A firewall is a network device used to block certain types of network traffic. Basically, a firewall forms the barrier between a trusted and an untrusted network.
A firewall can be a hardware, software, or a combination of both. It is used to prevent unauthorized programs or Internet users from accessing a private network and/or a single computer
A firewall focuses on implementing your security decisions for compliance purposes. It can stop hackers from accessing your computer with the packet filtering function. it enforces security policies by filtering wanted and unwanted traffic. A firewall Protects your personal information and limits data exposure from unauthorized access. Firewalls also Blocks “pop up” ads and certain cookies. It can also determine which programs can access the Internet.
Hardware firewalls – Implemented at the router level – this is the primary entry and exit point for all network traffic, the firewall filters every packet getting in or out of the network. Think of it as your main gate and the firewall is your gate keeper.
Software firewall is configured to enhance hardware firewall security. Software firewalls are installed on individual computers on a network and Unlike hardware firewalls, software firewalls can easily distinguish between programs on a computer. This lets them allow data to one program while blocking another. Usually less expensive and easier to configure.
Firewall Rules
Allow – traffic that flows automatically because it has been deemed
Block – traffic that is blocked because it has been deemed dangerous to your computer
Ask – asks the user whether or not the traffic is allowed to pass through

- It Can’t protect you against malicious insiders
- It Can’t protect you against connections that don’t go through it
- It Can’t protect against completely new threats
- Can’t protect against viruses
